6 tips to consider when purchasing car safety seats

Safety car seat is one of the most important items you choose for your child, so make sure you think twice when choosing. All car safety seats sold in the UK have been tested and certified, but which one is the most suitable?

As a parent, it is very important to choose a car seat that is suitable for children and matches your car. Before buying, you might as well try out the car seat in your car and let your children have a seating experience.

1. Select the tested and certified car safety seat
ECE R44 and UN R129 (i-size) are two major standards for testing and certification of automotive safety seats. It is very important for parents to choose a car seat tested according to one of these standards. The vehicle safety seat certified by ECE R44 standard has passed the front impact and rear impact tests, while the vehicle safety seat certified by UN R129 standard has also passed the side impact test. Child safety seats certified to UN R129 have met the latest requirements with maximum limits.

2. Ensure that the correct safety seat suitable for the child’s age and height is selected
Car safety seats are divided into three categories: baby car safety seats, baby car safety seats and high backrest raised safety seats. Generally, we will determine which kind of car safety seat to choose according to the child’s age and height.
Stage 1 (baby car safety seat): this type of safety seat is suitable for infants from newborn to about 12 months old (it is suitable for age, and there is adjustment space for up and down months according to the child’s height). If the child’s head begins to touch the highest point of the car seat and the baby can stabilize his head by himself, it means that it is time to replace the car seat in the next stage.
Stage 2 (child car safety seat): according to the UN R129 standard, children must use rear facing car safety seats before they reach 15 months, but besafe recommends that the period of using rear facing car safety seats can be extended to 4 years old, or even the longer the better. Some seats in this category support both backward and forward mounting, so reversing installation can be carried out when appropriate. If your child’s ears are at the same level as the highest point of the headrest when you adjust to the highest gear, it means that this car safety seat is no longer suitable for your child.
Stage 3 (high back raised safety seat): the high back raised safety seat in the last stage is the one used by children for the longest time. According to the law, children must use certified car safety seats before they grow to 135cm or reach the age of 12 (whichever comes first).
3. Simple and stable installation
First, check whether your car is equipped with ISOFIX interface. ISOFIX interface is a small metal ring installed under the back of the vehicle seat, which is used to fix the vehicle safety seat. It is very convenient to use the ISOFIX system for fixing. The indicator provided by the system can clearly show whether the seat or base is correctly installed, which helps to reduce the risk of improper installation.
4. Purchase car safety seats suitable for the whole applicable age group
Ensure that the car safety seat can give children the best safety protection and maximum comfort during use. It is best to buy car safety seats that can be adjusted according to the child’s growth. Other features to consider when purchasing include: leg extension space, adjustable height, adjustable lying position and side impact protection.
5. Side impact protection is very important
25-30% of the impact accidents are side impact. Therefore, it is very important to optimize the protection device in this area on the vehicle safety seat, which is also the provisions of the newly issued UN R129 standard.
6. More legroom – longer life
One of the most common reasons why parents let their children sit face forward too early is the lack of leg extension space. If the car safety seat can provide more leg extension space for children, its service time will be prolonged. Car safety seats with adjustable leg extension space can save space when children are young and provide more leg extension space for children when they grow up.
